What are the Entry Time Duration Rules?

The chart below shows the trading session for which an order will initially be valid in depending on when it is entered.

What happens if I enter an order on a holiday or weekend?

The rules above are in effect for orders entered during the regular trading week. Orders entered on non-trading days; such as weekends and holidays, will be active for the next valid trading session.


What are the Time-in- Force rules for the different Durations?

    1) Day orders

  • A Day order entered after 12:00 am and before 9:30 am ET is valid that same day during the regular trading Day session from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET.
  • A Day order entered after 9:30 am and before 4:00 pm ET is valid during the remainder of the same day regular trading Day session: 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET.
  • A Day order entered between 4:00 pm and prior to 7:00 pm ET is valid for the next trading Day regular session: 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET.
  • A Day order entered between 7:00 pm and prior to 12:00 am ET is valid for the next trading Day regular session: 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET

    2) Ext Hrs- AM orders
  • An Ext Hrs- AM order entered after 7:00 am and before 9:25 am ET is valid during that day's Ext Hrs AM session: 7:00 am to 9:25 am ET


  • 3) Ext Hrs- PM orders
  • An Ext Hrs- PM order entered between 4:00 pm and prior 7:00 pm ET is valid during that day's Ext Hrs PM Session: 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm ET
    4) GTC
  • A GTC order entered after 12:00 am and before 9:30 am ET is entered and remains valid in the same day's regular trading Day session: 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET and continues to be valid for all the ensuing days' regular market hours until the order is cancelled.
  • A GTC order entered after 9:30 am and before 4:00 pm ET is entered and remains valid in the same day regular trading Day session: 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET and continues to be valid for the remainder of the same day and all the ensuing days' regular market hours until the order is cancelled.
  • A GTC order entered after 4:00 pm and prior to 7:00 pm ET is entered and valid in the next trading Day regular session: 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET and for all the ensuing days' regular market hours until the order is cancelled.
  • A GTC order entered after 7:00 pm and prior to 12:00 am ET is entered and valid in the next trading Day regular session: 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET and in all the ensuing days' regular market hours until the order is cancelled.

    Can I place an order that has an apparently invalid duration at the time I am placing the order?
    Yes. You may enter orders with different durations 24 hours a day. When you place the order (the day and the time) is what determines the trading session in which it is valid.
